The research team led by Dr. Aravind Namasivayam received the prestigious Excellence in Applied Research Award from Speech-Language and Audiology Canada. The province-wide project titled “Motor Speech Research Study” was funded by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services and conducted at The Speech and Stuttering Institute in Toronto.

The study involved several internationally recognized researchers and speech-language pathologists from Ontario and the Netherlands and informed the development of an evidence-based decision-making pathway for identifying and treating children over 36 months of age with severe speech sound disorders. Specifically, determining who would benefit from more intensive motor-based speech therapy.

The research team included Dr. Pascal van Lieshout (Professor & Chair, Department of Speech-language Pathology, University of Toronto), Dr. Ben Maassen (Professor, University of Groningen, The Netherlands), Dr. Toni Rietveld, (Professor, Radboud University, The Netherlands), Dr. Frank Rudzicz (Scientist, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute), Dr. Robert Kroll (Executive Director, The Speech and Stuttering Institute, Toronto), Ms. Margit Pukonen (Clinical Program Director, The Speech and Stuttering Institute) and Ms. Debra Goshulak (Senior S-LP; The Speech and Stuttering Institute).
